Six Summer Reading Recommendations

The summer is upon us and schools will soon be breaking up for the long holidays. Here are six reading recommendations for children to enjoy this holiday and for you to (re)discover alongside them. We’ve written before about the so-called ‘summer slide‘ and how reading is a great way to keep things on track and young minds active.
The Secret GardenFrances Hodgson Burnett

A classic novel, ‘The Secret Garden’ has been a favourite for generations. It’s a story of self discovery for the ten-year old heroine who finds herself unexpectedly in England where she unearths a beautiful garden. She and her new friends help it grow and, as is often the case, prove that they know better than the grown-ups.

Anne of Green Gables L.M. Montgomery

Set on the beautiful Prince Edward Island in Canada, ‘Anne of Green Gables’ makes for an ideal summer read. The main character has an infectious lust for life and as she herself says: “Isn’t it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive – it’s such an interesting world.”

The Wind in the WillowsKenneth Grahame

‘Wind in the Willows’ opens with spring in the air and the prospect of summer hanging tantalisingly over the story. The memorable characters all have their distinct personalities and Ratty is a great proponent for enjoying the simple pleasures in life. This short novel is perhaps even more enjoyable as an adult!

Just So StoriesRudyard Kipling

A collection of short stories which are all absolute nonsense but thoroughly enjoyable – perfect for dipping into during the summer holidays. They also give enticing prompts for creative minds to have a go at writing their own short story about an animal of their choosing.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe C.S. Lewis

The first in C.S. Lewis’s series is set in the summer holidays; however the adventure begins, as so many adventures in England do, on a rainy day. It’s perhaps been one of the most influential children’s stories and serves as a great starting point to explore more literary classics.

WonderR. J. Palacio

‘Wonder’ is a more modern novel and has recently been made into a moving film. It is utterly addictive and offers fantastic lessons around bravery and the inclusion of all children. It’s certainly not a book to miss out on and should be a firm addition to your summer 2023 reading list.
